"In 2002 I had an opportunity to leave the business world and move from Charlotte to the Western North Carolina mountains where I had participated in art sessions at the Painting In The Mountains art school since the late 70’s and in 1985 worked as co-director for the school. In Burnsville I established the Gates Studio, teaching and sharing with other artists and became active in the arts community. Discovering the Western NC mountains in the 70’s I knew it was where I wanted to live. I enjoy painting figures and still life and, in recent years, have experienced the joy of painting in plein air in oils. Being outside in my beautiful mountains and trying to capture their essence in oils is a constant inspiration."
